A Word About the Founders

In 2009 the Music Conservatory opened its doors to the public with a humble 8 students and the two founders, Karin Wedemeyer and Ruth Klinginsmith, as the instructors. The mission was clear from the beginning “to instruct and inspire musical excellence” and along with it create a high level of accessibility. Conservatories are a known entity in some parts of the country and very much so in Europe where they function as an incubator for young musicians.

Some programs you find at MCS are from Germany and have a long-standing history of success. Combined knowledge has helped create an unprecedented program offering at MCS and has made this conservatory a prototype in the Pacific Northwest. Meanwhile, Mrs. Klinginsmith has moved on but the school has stayed on task in its ambition to become a leading school of performing arts in the Pacific Northwest.

Growth of the Conservatory

In 2013, MCS earned accreditation by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and has grown to employ 18 instructors and two administrators. We teach about 500 students in private lessons, group lessons and through outreach classes. In 2019, MCS purchased its historic downtown building, making it its permanent home. Renovation plans are in place to reshape 110 Main Street into a Center for Arts and Culture.
